Maui: Iao Valley and Road northwest

The day we landed in Hawaii was just airport to condo, and I didn't take any photos. This is our second day on Maui. We started with a little time at the beach. Actually, with the time change we made it out to the beach at 6am, and stayed until 11am or so.

Later, we drove across the middle of the island to the Iao vally, a beautiful place that had waterfalls, steep cliffs, and a little paved walking path through a traditional water garden.

After visiting the beautiful valley, we decided to take a drive around the northwest side of the island (from Kahului to Lahaina). Little did we know it was a couple of hours on a single lane, barely paved road overlooking the ocean. It reminded me a lot of driving through Guatemala, especially the little roadside fruit stands and town nestled in that remote part of the island.

You can see just how hairy the road was at times -- blind corner, single lane, yikes! But the views were sure worth it.

We made it to the west side, just north of Kahana, to see the sunset.

We ate dinner at the Maui brewing company. Overall, day 1 was a great day.
