4 Year Anniversary

Emery_ChrisW00081469 I really can't believe it's been 4 years already. We now have two children, and so many things have changed, but still the 4 years have flown by. I'm looking foward to another 4 great years, and lots more after that! Thank you Chris, for being the best husband, partner, father (to our kids) and person I could possibly imagine. Happy Anniversary. I love you!

It's fall, isn't it??

Every year around this time I start thinking it sort of feels like it ought to be fall. I start wanting to bake things with pumpkin and wear cozy sweaters and make soups. Unfortunately for me, it probably won't get down into the low nineties for another month, and not even into the eighties (which is sort of cold for us anyway) for at least a month and a half. I guess I could crank the air conditioner down...

Untitled

I usually try to hold out as long as I can to do any baking since the oven is sort of off limits this time of year, but I cracked. My pumpkin cravings (fueled by tons of interesting things on pinterest) and my sweet little boy coming into the kitchen, teeny baking pan in hand, asking if we could bake some cupcakes together was just too much to resist. These pumpkin muffins were wonderful. Again, from smitten kitchen, although I reduced the sugar by half, used the whole can of organic pumpkin, and used whole wheat flour so they could be "healthy" muffins.

I promise I'll try to take more photos of the boys, and fewer dessert photos for the rest of the month.

Untitled Louisa made this amazing roll cake for me tonight. It was even more delicious than it looks. Thanks Lou! Untitled She used this recipe from the amazing Smitten Kitchen.

Budding Artist

Untitled First experience with finger painting. Interesting, to say the least. I think he liked it. Untitled And big brother uses a brush. Partially because he is so sophisticated, and partially because he stills hates getting his fingers dirty... Untitled By the way, I have been taking a lot of pictures with my phone lately, using instagram. I like how the pictures look, although I don't think they're my best photography, but also they upload directly to flickr, which means it's a whole lot easier to keep up with blogging. So, if you were wondering (which I know you probably weren't) why I haven't been posting amazing photos every day taken with my big fancy camera, well, that's why.

Happy Birthday to Me

Untitled Another year! Thank you Tasha for these wonderful Boston Cream cupcakes. I first celebrated one of my birthdays with Steve and Tasha when I was turning 20. I guess it's become kind of a "longstanding" tradition by now :-) My dad is in town and we had a great weekend of little birthday fun here and there, and moving furniture all around our house for the rest of the time. Our new bedroom is awesome though! I'll try to post some pictures if we ever get everything moved and put away...

Bean Play

Untitled We went to the sweetest birthday party for one of Noah's classmates today. It was at playground of a local waldorf school. We played inside a little and heard a story of this little boy's life. In the little classroom there were play kitchens, wooden toys, silks, and little toys made of felted yard. No plastic at all. I've been trying to reduce our plastic lately since I've been reading about some recent studies on pthalates. Anyway, this post is about another plastic-free activity: playing with a bucket of beans. You really don't need toys at all to have a lot of fun. Untitled Untitled My mom came down for the weekend (and braved the very high temperatures! Thanks mom!). We had a great time playing with water outside and playing with trains inside of course. Chris was out of town at a friends wedding, so we were really glad to have the extra help. Untitled Untitled We still have lots of toys, of course, but I was feeling inspired to try to incorporate some more natural objects into our play. I would love to learn how to make the little felted yarn toys.

First Tooth!

I can't believe I forgot to mention this in the 10 month post. Wes got his first tooth last week. He is proud of it and has been grinning and using it to take bites out of things. I looked back (thank goodness for this blog) and found that Noah got his first tooth at around 7 months. I was thinking that 10 months seemed a little late, but here they come.

Also, we went to the pediatrician last week and he weighed just under 20 lbs. He was in the 98th percentile for height and 50th for weight. Another tall boy.

I was just chuckling while brushing my teeth when I remembered how he came back into the bathroom after drying off this evening. Noah was still sitting in the tub playing. Wes had carried a little toy all the way from the bedroom and tossed it into the tub. He then stood looking at me and doing little hops. I guess he wasn't ready to get out, just needed one more toy.

10 Months

IMG_7528.jpg This little baby is just getting bigger and bigger. He crawls so fast I was thinking I should have entered him in a crawling competition! He also pulls himself up (effortlessly), cruises, and even climbs up on things.
Some recent things:
- He says Mama and Dada very consistently and has just started saying something that sounds like Ball
- He loves his brother soooo much, but he is also fiercely possessive and defends his space
- He's starting to eat more table foods. Today I shared a cheese, spinach and avocado sandwich with him and he loved it
- He is just starting to have the dexterity to feed himself graham crackers or teething biscuits. He hasn't quite started picking up little bits of things to eat them
- He screams. He screams when he's happy. He screams when you take something from his little grasp. And he screams when he is angry. He screams. I don't mean a screaming cry, and mean just an ear-splitting-my-ears-are-sore-at-the-end-of-the-day scream. He also laughs and is so sweet, but wow that scream!

As always, I'm sure there are many more things I should be telling you, but here are some photos of my sweet little baby:

IMG_7527.jpg Notice the intense concetration above. He will not let that stick go for anything. IMG_7512.jpg Standing up while eating a teething biscuit. IMG_7499.jpg Blueberries and Cheerios. Yummy breakfast. IMG_7498.jpg Have to get in there Climbing in and out of a bucket, especially when filled with water, is a wonderful way to spend the day.

Family Vacations are the Best!

IMG_8873.jpg It was really hard to sort through and choose just a few photos from this trip. Not because they were amazing photos since I didn't even bring my big camera, but because we had so much fun and I think so many of these photos show that. This was a real vacation. We stayed in a nice hotel, played on the beach, saw Shamu at Sea World, and just had an all around wonderful time. I had no idea how much Noah would love the beach, and fall in love with Shamu (he is sleeping with a small cuddly version of the whale as I write this). Wesley was not so sure about the cold waves, but he thought the sand was pretty interesting. He also decided to cover himself with it, and cover me with it too. The shark tunnel at Sea world was one of my favorites. IMG_8903.jpg Wes liked watching the turtles. IMG_8924.jpg Noah, as I said, LOVED Shamu. We got to the show a few minutes late and sat high up in the stands. Noah watched intently for a while and then told me, "I want to get wet. It's fun to get splashed by Shamu." "Okay," I said, "we can walk down the stairs and get into the splash zone." This happened just before Shamu started his routine of going around the pool and at each section of the crown, sending a giant wave over the crowd with his tail. Noah was right down in front of the tank. I was halfway up the steps and water went over my head. It looked like a tidal wave going over him... and he came up laughing! IMG_8929.jpg IMG_8946.jpg IMG_8951.jpg Our hotel was near mission beach so we mostly just walked to the beach. We even got a free sunset boat cruise. So much fun. IMG_8969.jpg There's something just so California about this shot from the walk to mission beach. IMG_8973.jpg IMG_8990.jpg IMG_9005.jpg Okay, so I chose more than a few photos for this post, but there were so many more. Click the link to flickr on the right if you want to see a few more of them. Noah kept asking me if we could come back here again for our next vacation. We have a beach lover on our hands.
